Chicago Soul: The Forgotten Photographs by John H. White

£18.99

Artworld Books is developing Chicago Soul, a new photobook presenting the overlooked colour photographs of John H. White, made in 1970s Chicago as part of the Documerica project. Best known for his black-and-white photojournalism, White’s colour work from this period has remained largely unseen as a cohesive body of work.

Drawn from the US National Archives and newly colour graded, Chicago Soul brings these photographs together for the first time, restoring their tonal richness and presenting them as they were intended to be seen. The images offer an intimate and expansive portrait of Black life in Chicago, capturing everyday moments of community, family and street life with a sensitivity and proximity that reflects White’s deep connection to the city. Rather than focusing on spectacle or crisis, the work attends to the rhythms of daily experience; its humour, warmth and quiet dignity. The project is conceived as both a publication and a curatorial act: an effort to reframe an overlooked archive and to reconsider White’s place within the history of colour photography.
